News consumption on YouTube is moving beyond phones and computers and increasingly reaching television screens, according to new figures and product updates released by the company.

YouTube said viewers watched more than 35 billion hours of news content worldwide during 2025. More than 12 billion of those hours came through connected televisions, showing that digital news channels are competing for attention in the same living-room environment once dominated by traditional broadcasters.

New tools for news publishers

At its News Working Group in New York, YouTube outlined several tools intended to help newsrooms make faster editorial and packaging decisions. Enhanced Insights and Research sections in YouTube Studio are designed to help publishers identify emerging subjects and understand how earlier coverage performed.

YouTube also described feedback tools that can evaluate narrative flow, pacing and story structure before publication. Dynamic thumbnails can display different images to different audience segments, while a forthcoming video A/B testing feature is expected to let publishers compare hooks, formats and visual approaches.

Ask Studio will be able to examine earlier coverage and suggest refreshed thumbnails that could introduce older reporting to new viewers. Availability may differ by account and market as the features roll out.

Memberships and direct audience support

The company is also expanding Channel Memberships. Planned additions include a dedicated hub for exclusive content, video previews for potential members and members-only community spaces.

YouTube reported that Channel Memberships generated more than $1.5 billion in creator payouts over the previous five years. That figure covers the broader creator ecosystem, not news publishers alone.

For independent newsrooms, direct membership can provide revenue that is less dependent on advertising. It also places greater pressure on publishers to offer consistent programming, clear benefits and a trustworthy relationship with viewers.

AI identity protection

YouTube said it is expanding identity-protection tools as synthetic audio and video become more convincing. Its existing Likeness Detection system helps creators identify unauthorized uses of their appearance. The company plans to add speaking-voice detection and make the controls accessible through its mobile application.

The connected-TV figures suggest that video news should be designed for both mobile viewers and people watching from across a room. Large graphics, clean audio, readable text and longer, organized programs may become increasingly important as YouTube’s role in television viewing expands.
