NEW YORK — The Yankees are moving on after overpowering the Boston Red Sox 9-2 Wednesday night to complete a two-game sweep of their American League Wild Card Series.

Max Fried held Boston to three hits over six innings, while Cody Bellinger drove in four runs and Luis García Jr. delivered three hits in his first postseason start. New York now advances to face the AL East champion Tampa Bay Rays in a Division Series beginning Saturday.

A close game broke open in the sixth

The Yankees carried a 2-1 lead into the sixth inning before scoring six runs and turning the rivalry matchup into a rout. García homered earlier in the game, and Bellinger capped the sixth-inning surge with a three-run shot that put New York ahead 8-1.

Every Yankees starter recorded a hit. New York batted .382 over the two-game series and scored 18 runs. The lineup also went 9-for-20 with runners in scoring position, a major improvement from a regular season in which the Yankees ranked 19th in that category.

Fried’s performance followed Cam Schlittler’s shutout work in Game 1. Together, the starting pitchers gave New York control of the series and kept Boston from creating sustained pressure.

Boston’s offense never found its rhythm

The Red Sox managed only seven hits in 60 at-bats across the series, a .117 average, and struck out 18 times. They were outscored 18-2.

Boston played without leadoff hitter Roman Anthony because of a hand injury. The Red Sox had recovered from a 32-46 start to reach the postseason, but their bullpen struggled in New York and their offense could not extend the season.

The next question is Aaron Judge

Yankees captain Aaron Judge missed the Wild Card Series with a calf injury. His availability against Tampa Bay remained uncertain Wednesday night. New York won without him, but the Rays present a different challenge after taking the regular-season series 7-6.

Gerrit Cole is expected to start Game 1. The Yankees will need to carry forward the disciplined at-bats and timely hitting that turned the Boston series into a short one.

What is confirmed and what comes next

The sweep, statistics and Saturday matchup are official. Judge’s return is not. Any projection about the Division Series remains analysis until the Yankees announce their roster and the games are played.

Onyx’s perspective: The sweep was not built on one superstar moment. New York won with starting pitching, depth and a lineup that produced from top to bottom. That formula travels well, but Tampa Bay already proved during the season that it can make the Yankees work for every win.
