Georgia investigators are seeking information after a neighborhood block party in Vienna erupted in gunfire early Sunday, October 4, killing two people and injuring 35. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says the investigation remains active.
The agency identified the people killed as Ja’Quavion Aderious Jackson, 21, of Cordele, and Macaleb Malik Jackson, 23, of Hawkinsville. In its October 4 update, the GBI said the injured victims’ conditions ranged from stable to critical.
According to preliminary information released by the agency, Dooly County sheriff’s deputies were patrolling the gathering when they heard shots around 1:25 a.m. from the 900 block of Pine Street. Responding deputies found multiple injured people and two people who were pronounced dead in the 600 block. Patients were taken to regional hospitals.
The gathering occurred during homecoming weekend. AP reported that the school system said it was not an official school event. That distinction prevents responsibility for the neighborhood gathering from being inaccurately assigned to the school.
A motive and arrests had not been established in the reports reviewed for this morning’s update. Claims identifying shooters or explaining why the violence occurred should not be treated as fact without confirmation.
Anyone with information can contact the GBI’s Perry office at 478-987-4545. Anonymous tips may be submitted through the agency’s official tip form or by calling 1-800-597-TIPS.
