The United States has recorded 3,471 confirmed measles cases in 2026 through September 17, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The CDC reports 39 outbreaks this year. About 95 percent of confirmed cases are associated with outbreaks, showing that the virus is spreading through connected clusters rather than appearing only as isolated travel cases.
Measles is highly contagious and can spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Complications may include pneumonia, brain inflammation and death, with young children and medically vulnerable people facing greater risk.
What the figures do and do not show
The national total contains cases confirmed by jurisdictions and reported to the CDC. State and local health departments may have more recent figures because national reporting involves a delay.
The data also contradict claims that international visitors account for most American infections. The CDC lists 17 cases among international visitors, a very small share of the national total.
Practical guidance
People who believe they were exposed or who develop symptoms should call a healthcare provider before arriving in person. Advance notice allows medical staff to reduce the risk of exposing other patients. Anyone uncertain about vaccination history can check with a provider or state immunization registry.
