The University of North Florida’s Chi Phi chapter is serving a five-year suspension, according to recently published reporting on university records. The case carries an important distinction for Jacksonville students and families: a campus conduct finding and a criminal prosecution are separate processes.
UNF Spinnaker reported October 19 that the Omega Zeta chapter’s suspension began March 16, 2026, and continues through May 3, 2031, citing a Dean of Students decision letter. News4JAX’s October 23 follow-up reported findings involving hazing, endangerment and other conduct violations.
The suspension is newly receiving public attention; it was not imposed overnight.
What investigators reviewed
The university inquiry followed an anonymous December 2025 complaint. Reporting on the records describes photographs appearing to show partially undressed or nude students, hose-spraying and possible drug use. News4JAX reported that the images did not establish the exact dates of the activities.
A December 18 cease-and-desist order barred chapter operations while the inquiry continued. Subsequent university findings included noncompliance with that order. These descriptions are attributed to the records reviewed by the reporting outlets, rather than presented as TalkLife’s independent identification of people in the photographs.
Why the police conclusion matters
News4JAX reported that the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office reviewed the material and concluded that the depicted activity did not meet Florida’s criminal-hazing threshold, with the State Attorney’s Office agreeing. The case was classified as noncriminal.
That conclusion must remain alongside the university findings. Reporting the suspension as a criminal conviction would misstate the outcome. Treating the absence of criminal charges as if the university had issued no sanction would also leave readers with an incomplete account.
Spinnaker reported that UNF’s fraternity and sorority office described student safety as its priority and said Greek-life members, athletes and club leaders must complete hazing-prevention education.
For students deciding which organizations to join, the dated records provide a concrete starting point: the chapter’s suspension remains in force through the stated period. Individual allegations should not be extended to every member or to unrelated campus organizations.
