Torrential rain and landslides associated with Typhoon Dujuan have killed at least four people along Japan’s Pacific coast, according to Japanese broadcaster NHK.
Six people remained missing Tuesday morning, and approximately 45,000 households experienced power outages. Emergency crews continued searching communities in Kanagawa and Chiba prefectures, including areas near Tokyo.
Flooding and landslide danger
Heavy rainfall caused rivers to overflow and destabilized hillsides. Residents reported rapidly rising water, damaged homes and fears that additional rain could trigger more landslides.
Last month, torrential rain also caused serious flooding in Chiba, damaging vehicles and disrupting travel around Narita International Airport.
What remains uncertain
The deaths, missing-person reports and outages have been reported by Japanese authorities and NHK. Those figures may change as search teams reach damaged areas and officials reconcile reports from local communities.
Residents in affected areas should follow local evacuation orders and emergency instructions. Images and videos circulating online should be verified before they are described as showing this storm.
