South African police are searching for gunmen after two separate shootings killed 27 people within hours of each other. In Wedela township, near Johannesburg, attackers opened fire at a tavern Saturday night, killing 17 people and injuring 15, police said. At a venue selling grilled meat in Lwandle, outside Cape Town, 10 people were killed and 11 injured early Sunday.
President Cyril Ramaphosa condemned the violence, while investigators pursued leads in both cases. Police said a possible illegal-mining turf dispute was one line of inquiry in the Wedela attack. A business rivalry was being examined as a possible factor in Lwandle. Neither explanation has been established as the motive.
No arrests had been announced at the time of Reuters’ September 27 report. The shootings are geographically separate and should not be described as a coordinated operation without evidence. They follow another deadly shooting near Durban days earlier, deepening public concern about illegal firearms and organized crime.
For families in the affected neighborhoods, the immediate issues are medical care for survivors, protection for witnesses and answers from investigators. Crime is also likely to be debated ahead of municipal elections in November, but political arguments should not replace careful reporting on what happened to the victims.
