Developing story. Hurricane Simon weakened as Monday began, but the change in category offered no assurance that Mexico’s Pacific coastal communities were out of danger.
CBS/AP’s 5:10 a.m. Eastern update on October 12 reported Category 3 strength, sustained winds near 115 mph and an offshore eye.
Associated Press coverage carried by KAXE described the storm moving parallel to the coast near Puerto Vallarta. Authorities in Jalisco suspended Monday classes in 22 coastal municipalities and evacuated threatened areas. President Claudia Sheinbaum urged residents to remain sheltered until authorities announced that the danger had passed.
The forecast still involved damaging winds, heavy rainfall and dangerous coastal conditions. AP reported additional rainfall forecasts of two to four inches, with isolated amounts up to eight inches, across Colima, Jalisco, Nayarit and Sinaloa through early Thursday. Those are projected amounts, not rainfall already measured at every location.
Deutsche Welle reported flooded streets and rescue efforts in Manzanillo, along with a temporary closure of Puerto Vallarta’s airport. Travellers should confirm their own flight’s status directly with the airline; a general news report cannot establish whether an individual departure will operate.
There is a practical reason to resist treating a lower category as an all-clear. NOAA explains that hurricane categories measure wind, while tropical cyclones also threaten communities through flooding, storm surge, rough surf and rip currents. Rain-related danger can extend well inland and remain after winds ease.
That makes the position of the eye only one part of the story. People outside its path can still experience dangerous conditions, particularly where water collects or steep terrain increases the risk of slides. NOAA advises following local emergency managers and avoiding flooded roads and damaged bridges.
For families watching from abroad, the most useful support is accurate information: the latest local instructions, a confirmed safe place to stay and verified transport arrangements. Dramatic waterfront images should never replace those details.
This article is a morning snapshot. Storm strength, movement and local restrictions can change; official civil-protection instructions should guide immediate decisions.
