A feud between two major cybercrime organizations has spilled into public view after ShinyHunters claimed it seized control of a dark-web site operated by the rival cl0p group.
Cybersecurity researchers examined the evidence and confirmed that cl0p’s site had been compromised. The conflict reportedly grew out of a dispute over a previously unknown vulnerability in Oracle’s E-Business Suite.
Cl0p has been associated with attacks exploiting software weaknesses to steal information from hundreds of organizations. ShinyHunters has also been linked to data theft affecting businesses, educational systems and online platforms.
Criminal claims require caution
The takeover of the rival website is supported by technical evidence. Accusations the groups are making about who discovered or stole a particular exploit remain claims by criminal actors and should not be treated as independently proven facts.
A conflict between cybercrime groups can expose details about their methods. It can also create additional danger if stolen information is leaked, resold or used for retaliation.
What people can do now
Individuals cannot prevent a company from being breached, but they can limit the damage. Use a different password for every important account, activate multifactor authentication and be suspicious of unexpected reset notices or messages demanding immediate action.
