Sherri Shepherd is headed back to Broadway in a role audiences may not expect: the Genie in Disney’s Aladdin.
The television host, comedian and actor will begin the limited engagement October 16, 2026, and continue through January 3, 2027. It will be Shepherd’s second Broadway appearance.
A familiar role with a new interpretation
The Genie has traditionally been played by a man in major stage and screen productions. Shepherd’s casting opens the role to a different comic rhythm and point of view while keeping the character’s central function in the story.
Shepherd told The Associated Press that she wants young girls to see broader possibilities. She is taking voice and dance lessons as she prepares for the production.
What is confirmed — and what remains to be seen
The casting and performance dates are official. Shepherd’s training is also confirmed in her interview. Audience reaction, reviews and the production’s commercial effect remain unknown until the run begins.
