Saudi Arabia says its forces intercepted a Houthi drone south of Mecca as the conflict with Yemen’s Iran-aligned movement expands across cities, oil infrastructure and strategic Red Sea shipping routes.
The Saudi-led coalition said the drone was destroyed before entering restricted airspace near Islam’s holiest city. Houthi officials denied targeting Mecca or other religious sites, while claiming responsibility for attacks elsewhere in Saudi territory.

Mecca carries extraordinary religious significance for Muslims worldwide and receives millions of pilgrims. Any threat near the city can create fear far beyond the immediate military conflict.

Reuters reports that U.S. officials met Houthi representatives in Oman over the weekend, citing five people familiar with the discussions. According to those sources, the Houthis said they would continue observing an earlier ceasefire involving American and Israeli vessels while reserving the right to attack Saudi ships.
The State Department has not publicly confirmed the meeting or its details. That means the reported talks should be treated as credible reporting based on unnamed sources, not as a publicly documented agreement.
What remains disputed
Saudi Arabia’s announcement of the interception is confirmed as an official statement. The Houthis deny aiming at Mecca. Claims from either side about individual targets, battlefield victories or destroyed aircraft require independent evidence.
