Russia and Ukraine traded deadly attacks overnight as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy prepared to meet President Donald Trump during the United Nations General Assembly.
Russian missile and drone attacks struck at least four Ukrainian regions and killed four civilians, according to Ukrainian authorities. Ukrainian forces attacked an oil refinery in Russia’s Samara region, where regional officials reported one death and four injuries.
Energy infrastructure remains a target
Ukraine says the Samara refinery supports Russia’s central fuel supply. Russia says its strikes targeted Ukrainian military-production facilities, including ammunition and missile plants.
Both governments deny deliberately attacking civilians. Their descriptions of intended targets require attribution because independent access to active strike sites is often limited.
Diplomacy continues alongside the fighting
Zelenskyy is seeking additional Patriot air-defense systems and international support for a proposed halt to attacks on energy infrastructure. French President Emmanuel Macron has also discussed the idea with Trump.
No energy truce or broader ceasefire has taken effect. The reported casualties and physical strikes are documented, but competing claims about individual targets remain disputed.
