Russian drones struck Zaporizhzhia on Monday, damaging residential buildings, a university and a shopping center and injuring five people, according to Ukrainian authorities.
The attack followed Ukraine’s weekend operation involving more than 1,000 drones directed at targets across Russia, including hundreds aimed toward Moscow during Russia’s parliamentary election.
The conflict is crossing more borders
Moldova reported that a drone entered its airspace, adding to concerns that repeated incursions could draw neighboring countries closer to the conflict. Romania and Moldova have both raised alarms about drone activity near or across their borders.
Russia said it intercepted 244 Ukrainian drones. Ukraine said it countered 148 Russian drones. Those figures are official military claims and cannot be independently verified in full.
Diplomacy without de-escalation
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York and is expected to meet international leaders. Despite the diplomatic activity, there is little public evidence that either side is preparing to reduce military operations.
The damage and reported injuries in Zaporizhzhia are documented. Claims concerning intended targets, interception totals and military effectiveness should continue to be attributed to the governments making them.
