Dutch eyewear retailer Hans Anders has suspended sales of Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses in the Netherlands and Belgium, citing privacy concerns. Reuters reported the decision October 2, as consumer and privacy organizations questioned how wearable cameras affect people who are recorded.

The suspension is a retailer’s decision, not a worldwide government ban. That difference matters as the story circulates: the glasses have not been universally prohibited, and the action does not establish a court finding that their use is unlawful.

Meta says a bright light on the front of the glasses signals photography or video recording. The company says the indicator cannot be switched off and recording is disabled if it is covered or tampered with. Those are the manufacturer’s descriptions of its safeguards, rather than an independent assessment of how every person nearby experiences them.

The dispute reaches beyond the person buying the device. Someone speaking with a wearer may not notice an indicator or understand what happens to a recording afterward. The practical issue is whether an unobtrusive camera changes expectations in ordinary conversations.

A U.S. lawsuit against Meta and Luxottica has also alleged that human annotators viewed recordings without the subjects’ knowledge. Those allegations have not been established as findings in this reporting.

For consumers, the clearest starting point is transparency: explain when recording is taking place and respect requests to stop. Legal requirements vary by location and use. Hans Anders’ pause brings those questions into the retail setting without resolving the broader debate over wearable technology.
