Thousands of flights across the United States were delayed or canceled after a telecommunications failure interrupted Federal Aviation Administration communications in the Northeast.
The disruption was linked to a failed circuit and an accidentally severed fiber-optic cable in New Jersey. Incoming flights were temporarily halted at airports including JFK, LaGuardia, Newark, Philadelphia and Boston.
Operations restored
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said normal airport operations resumed after technicians repaired the damaged lines. Approximately 7,000 flights were affected nationwide, including more than 1,400 at the major New York-area airports.
Authorities have not reported evidence that the incident involved a cyberattack or deliberate sabotage. The known cause was damaged telecommunications infrastructure.
A larger infrastructure concern
The outage renewed questions about aging air-traffic-control equipment and the lack of redundancy in critical communications systems. Congress has already approved $12.5 billion for modernization, and federal officials are seeking additional funding.
Travelers affected by major disruptions should check airline applications before leaving for the airport and review the carrier’s rebooking and refund policies.
