North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles from its eastern coastal region on Sunday, increasing pressure on the United States and its regional allies while nuclear diplomacy remains stalled.
South Korea’s military said the missiles were launched from near Wonsan. One traveled approximately 450 kilometers and the other more than 600 kilometers before landing in the sea. Japan and South Korea monitored the launches, and no injuries or property damage were reported.
Why the launches matter
The tests followed renewed North Korean criticism of American military exercises in the region. Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, described U.S.-led activity as a provocation and said the country would continue strengthening its nuclear deterrent.
The United States and South Korea say their exercises are defensive. President Donald Trump previously reduced some joint military activity in an effort to create room for diplomacy, but formal negotiations have remained largely frozen since talks collapsed in 2019.
A changing regional balance
North Korea has strengthened its relationships with Russia and China, potentially giving Pyongyang greater economic and diplomatic room to resist Western pressure. South Korean President Lee Jae Myung continues to argue that renewed dialogue is necessary to reduce the risk of escalation.
Confirmed facts versus political claims
The launches and reported flight distances are based on monitoring by South Korean and Japanese defense officials. North Korea’s description of allied exercises as a direct threat is its government’s political and military position, not an independently established fact.
A weapons test is serious, but it does not by itself prove that an attack is imminent.
