DEVELOPING: NATO fighter jets shot down a drone over Lithuania on Tuesday, September 15, after it crossed into the country from Belarus and remained in Lithuanian airspace for about 30 minutes. Officials said the aircraft appeared to be carrying explosives.
The interception is the first reported incident of its kind inside Lithuania. It comes amid heightened concern about Russian military activity near NATO’s eastern border, including recent strikes close to Poland and other drone incursions in the Baltic region.
Why this matters
Lithuania is a NATO member bordering Belarus and Russia’s Kaliningrad region. An armed aircraft entering its airspace carries greater consequences than an incident confined to Ukraine because NATO members have pledged to defend one another. That does not mean the alliance has declared the incident an intentional attack or activated Article 5.
What is confirmed
NATO’s interception and the drone’s route are confirmed by officials. Investigators have not publicly established its intended target or whether it entered Lithuania deliberately. Those unanswered questions should not be filled with speculation.
