JACKSONVILLE — Naval Air Station Jacksonville resumed normal operations Friday after a suspicious piece of luggage prompted a security response near its air terminal, according to an updated News4JAX report citing the base.
The luggage was cleared at 10:45 a.m., and the terminal area received the all-clear at 11 a.m. on October 23, the station reported in its 12:13 p.m. update.
Base security personnel and a military working dog responded around 7:30 a.m. People nearby were evacuated as a precaution while explosive-ordnance specialists from Mayport and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service investigated.
All base gates remained open, although traffic backups were reported. Naval Hospital Jacksonville warned patients about possible access delays and said staff would accommodate people arriving late for appointments.
The updated information replaces the earlier instruction asking personnel to avoid the terminal area. The News4JAX report does not identify an explosive device or establish criminal intent. Its confirmed outcome is that the luggage and terminal area were cleared.
People sharing the morning alert should include the all-clear so an earlier warning is not mistaken for an ongoing closure.
