French President Emmanuel Macron says he discussed a possible Ukraine-Russia agreement with President Donald Trump that would halt attacks on energy infrastructure.
The proposal comes as both countries intensify strikes against power systems, oil facilities and logistics networks. Damage to those targets has affected civilians and contributed to pressure on international fuel markets.
A proposal, not a ceasefire
Macron said the conversation was constructive and emphasized Ukraine’s need for additional interceptor missiles to protect its electrical system during winter.
He also plans to raise the proposal with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Russia and Ukraine have not announced acceptance of a new moratorium, and no enforceable energy ceasefire has taken effect.
Why it matters
Protecting energy infrastructure could reduce civilian hardship and lower the risk of wider economic disruption. Previous limited arrangements have proved difficult to monitor because the two sides disagree about targets and responsibility for violations.
What is confirmed is that Macron and Trump discussed the idea. Any description of the conversation as a peace agreement or breakthrough would overstate what has occurred.
