LOS ANGELES — Five people died Tuesday across two connected emergencies in the Chatsworth area: a collision involving a city bus and an SUV, followed hours later by the crash of a television news helicopter covering the original scene.
The helicopter was used by NBC4 and Telemundo 52 and operated by Angel City Air. Journalist Eliana Moreno and pilot George Marciniw were killed, along with a person on the ground. Two other people were hospitalized after the aircraft crashed and ignited vehicles and storage containers.
The earlier road collision killed two people and injured six others. More than 70 firefighters responded to the helicopter crash and the resulting fire.
What investigators know
The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration are investigating. No official cause has been announced. Investigators are expected to examine the aircraft, flight path, maintenance history, weather, pilot communications and available video before reaching conclusions.
That distinction matters. The fatalities and sequence of events are confirmed, but suggestions involving mechanical failure, weather or pilot error remain speculation until investigators release evidence.

NBC4 and Telemundo 52 mourned their colleagues, while state and local officials offered condolences to the families of all those killed.
