Kauai’s mayor said the island is open, but recovery is uneven. Some residents and businesses are still dealing with storm damage and disrupted services, while restaurants, tour operators and other small companies depend on visitor spending to keep workers employed.
The message requires balance: encouraging responsible travel should not minimize losses suffered by local families or send visitors into areas that remain unsafe. Travelers should verify conditions with official county sources and individual lodging or tour providers before arriving.
Natural disasters often create a second crisis after the immediate danger passes. Images of destruction can lead people to assume an entire island is closed, reducing revenue needed for recovery in communities that are ready to welcome guests.
