Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said Friday that it struck the Togo-flagged tanker Trend near the Strait of Hormuz, alleging that the ship entered a restricted area without authorization. The claim adds to weeks of military confrontation and shipping disruption around one of the world’s most important energy corridors.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency said it had received reports involving multiple tankers in the region. Those notices establish that maritime incidents were reported, but they do not independently prove every detail in Iran’s account. The tanker’s precise condition and the full circumstances surrounding the reported strike were not immediately clear.
The distinction matters. Statements from governments and armed forces are evidence of what those parties say happened; they are not, by themselves, independent confirmation of damage, intent or legal responsibility.
