Wildfire emissions in Indonesia surged during the first week of September as drought, extreme heat and a powerful El Niño pattern intensified fires across the country’s forests and carbon-rich peatlands.

Data reported by Reuters showed Indonesia produced an estimated 19.7 million metric tons of carbon-dioxide emissions from fires between September 1 and September 7—the highest national total recorded globally during that period.

Where the fires are burning

Some of the most serious activity has been reported in Kalimantan and Sumatra. Smoke from fires in these regions can travel long distances, degrading air quality locally and across national borders. Peat fires are especially difficult to extinguish because they can burn below the surface and continue releasing smoke even after visible flames have diminished.

Officials and monitoring services counted 13,443 hotspots from August 1 through September 8, according to the Reuters report. Satellite observations from NASA also showed extensive smoke over parts of Indonesia at the start of September.

Health and climate consequences

Fine particles in wildfire smoke can aggravate asthma and other respiratory or cardiovascular conditions. Children, older adults, pregnant people and outdoor workers can face elevated risks when air quality reaches unhealthy levels.

The climate impact is also significant. Indonesia’s peatlands store vast amounts of carbon accumulated over centuries. When drained or burned, they can release that stored carbon rapidly, adding to warming that can in turn increase the likelihood of severe heat and drought.

What to watch

Forecasts cited in the report suggest fire emissions could continue rising through October if dry conditions persist. The ultimate scale will depend on rainfall, enforcement against illegal burning, firefighting capacity and efforts to keep peatlands wet.

Residents should follow official air-quality guidance, limit strenuous outdoor activity during heavy smoke and use effective particle filtration indoors where possible.
