DEVELOPING: Indonesian rescuers are searching the Java Sea after the Virgo Transport 8 ferry capsized during rough weather. Officials reported six confirmed deaths, 108 rescues and 129 people still missing Tuesday.
The vessel was traveling from Surabaya to Banjarmasin when it overturned early Sunday. A survivor told Reuters that the ferry tilted sharply and capsized within minutes. He and others clung to floating objects for about 10 hours before they were rescued.
A difficult rescue operation
High waves and poor visibility have restricted underwater searches. More than 1,000 personnel, aircraft and ships are involved. Divers, underwater drones and sonar equipment are expected to examine the wreck when conditions permit.
What is known
The official death, rescue and missing-person counts are confirmed but may change as passenger records and survivor accounts are reconciled. The final cause has not been established.
A survivor said no alarm sounded before the ferry overturned. That account is important evidence, but it is not yet a completed finding against the operator or crew. Investigators will need to examine weather conditions, vessel stability, loading, maintenance and emergency procedures.
