A 34-year-old St. Augustine woman died in a wrong-way collision on Interstate 295 early Sunday, while another driver suffered life-threatening injuries, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

Action News Jax reported October 4 that the woman was traveling south in the interstate’s northbound lanes near San Jose Boulevard, north of I-95. Investigators said her vehicle sideswiped a sedan before colliding head-on with an SUV.

She was pronounced dead at the scene. The sedan’s driver sustained minor injuries, and the SUV’s driver was reported in critical condition. FHP said the drivers were wearing seatbelts.

The report establishes the direction of travel and the sequence investigators described. It does not explain why the woman entered the wrong lanes.

That distinction is essential in a fatal crash. Without confirmed findings, assigning impairment, distraction or a medical episode would turn an unanswered question into an unsupported accusation.

For Jacksonville residents, the immediate impact is the loss of a life and another person’s serious injuries. Any later account of contributing factors should come from investigative evidence rather than assumptions about wrong-way crashes generally.

The available report does not establish a continuing road closure. Drivers seeking current travel conditions should check live traffic information rather than use an early crash story as a real-time road-status notice.
