The Middle East conflict widened Tuesday as Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi movement launched missiles and drones at four cities in southern Saudi Arabia. Saudi authorities reported 73 people injured, including women and children, and fires at energy-related sites.
The attacks affected Khamis Mushait, Abha, Najran and Jazan. The Houthis said their targets included a Saudi airbase and oil facilities. Satellite imagery reviewed by Reuters showed smoke over two targeted facilities, while Houthi media later reported Saudi counterstrikes in Yemen.
What is confirmed — and what is developing
The reported injuries, fires and satellite evidence are confirmed. Claims from the Houthis about every target and reports about specific Saudi counterstrikes should remain attributed until independently verified.
Brent crude approached $100 a barrel as markets assessed the risk of additional disruptions. That price movement is confirmed, but no single military event explains every change in retail gasoline, food or transportation costs.
Why this matters beyond the region
Instability near major oil-producing areas can affect fuel, shipping, airline and grocery costs far from the fighting. More than 18,500 people have also reportedly fled renewed fighting along Yemen’s western coast, keeping the civilian consequences at the center of the story.
