The ShinyHunters hacking group says information stolen from the FBI includes medical and psychiatric evaluations belonging to bureau personnel. Reuters reported that it partially authenticated documents supplied by the group. The FBI says it is aggressively investigating the reported breach.
The alleged material reportedly includes employee information and details connected to sensitive assignments. If verified in full, the exposure could create risks ranging from identity theft and harassment to blackmail and threats against employees or their families.
What is known
Reuters verified portions of the files and confirmed that a federal investigation is underway. The complete size of the collection, the number of people affected and the authenticity of every document have not been independently established.
Why medical data requires special protection
Unlike a password, medical history cannot simply be changed after a breach. Psychiatric evaluations can also be weaponized through stigma or selective publication even when they contain no evidence of misconduct.
