A Syrian army ammunition depot in Al-Eis, Aleppo province, exploded early Monday, injuring four people and causing damage and panic in nearby communities.
Emergency workers evacuated residents, closed roads around the facility and began clearing unexploded projectiles. Syria’s Defense Ministry says it has opened an investigation.
A recurring danger
This is the fourth reported military-storage explosion in Syria during September. At least 16 similar incidents have occurred since former President Bashar al-Assad was removed from power in December 2024.
Officials have blamed deteriorating ammunition, fires and poor storage conditions for some previous explosions. Many incidents remain unexplained, however, and authorities have not announced a cause for Monday’s blast.
Why it matters
Military stockpiles can remain dangerous long after the front line moves. Aging explosives, damaged storage buildings and unsecured projectiles create continuing risks for surrounding civilian communities and emergency personnel.
The explosion, injuries and evacuation are confirmed. Any suggestion of sabotage, an airstrike or deliberate attack would be speculation without supporting evidence.
