A Flydubai flight carrying more than 170 passengers landed safely in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday after a violent incident inside the cockpit and a rapid loss of altitude that triggered fears of a possible hijacking.

Flight FZ1073 was traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv when it issued an emergency alert over Saudi Arabia. Flight-tracking data reviewed by Reuters showed the aircraft descending more than 14,000 feet in roughly 30 seconds while cruising above 30,000 feet. The plane later landed at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Tabuk.

What happened in the cockpit

Israeli officials said the first officer stabbed the captain and attempted to crash the aircraft. According to their preliminary account, the injured captain managed to release the locked cockpit door, allowing a passenger and crew members to enter and subdue the alleged attacker.

Reuters verified video from the aircraft showing the bloody aftermath, including two injured men on the floor. A reserve Flydubai crew that was traveling on the flight took control and landed the plane safely, the airline said.

No passengers were reported injured. Both pilots required medical treatment, according to airport officials. Passengers later continued to Israel on another aircraft.

What is confirmed — and what is still alleged

The emergency landing, rapid descent, cockpit violence, injuries to both pilots and intervention by passengers and crew are supported by airline statements, flight data, official accounts and verified video. Flydubai confirmed that a reserve crew landed the aircraft.

The motive remains unknown. Israel’s government described the incident as an attempt to deliberately crash the plane and referred to the alleged attacker as a terrorist. Flydubai, however, said the underlying reasons had not been established and warned against premature speculation. No publicly released evidence has yet established a motive, an organizational connection or the full sequence that led to the fight.

That distinction matters. It is accurate to report that Israeli officials allege an attempted deliberate crash. It is not yet accurate to present the motive or terrorism label as independently proven fact.

Questions for aviation investigators

Investigators will likely examine how a weapon reached the cockpit, what security screening the pilots received, whether warning signs existed before the flight, how the aircraft responded during the descent and what damage it sustained. The cockpit door is designed to prevent unauthorized entry, but in this case the injured captain’s ability to unlock it appears to have allowed help to reach the flight deck.

The incident may also renew discussion of mental-health monitoring, two-person cockpit procedures and how airlines prepare reserve crew members to respond when the operating pilots become incapacitated.

Why this is the evening lead

The most important confirmed fact is that the aircraft landed and the passengers survived. The actions of the injured captain, responding crew and passengers appear to have prevented a far worse outcome. But the event also raises urgent, international questions about airline security that cannot be answered responsibly until investigators establish the evidence.

Onyx’s view: In a story this dramatic, restraint is part of accuracy. Courage deserves recognition, but unverified motive claims should not outrun the investigation. The public needs a clear account of what happened, how the safeguards worked, where they failed and what changes may follow.
