Published October 19, 2026. Verdict: genuine older footage, falsely presented as a current event.

A video circulating as footage of current unrest in France shows protesters entering Euronext’s Paris offices in April 2023, not a new stock-exchange incident in October 2026.
Reuters Fact Check reported October 19 that journalist Luc Auffret published the original recording on April 20, 2023, during pension-reform protests. He confirmed filming it. Reuters matched features of the building and people to its contemporary coverage. Paris police said no protest matching the clip had occurred there during the current unrest.
The correction concerns the date and context attached to authentic footage. It is not a finding that the recording was generated by artificial intelligence, or that every report of current demonstrations is false.
The caption is part of the claim
When a video is shared, viewers receive more than moving pictures. They also receive an explanation of what the pictures supposedly mean. A false date can change that meaning even when no frame has been altered.
There are several different questions worth asking before passing along a dramatic clip. Does an earlier copy exist? Does the location fit the caption? Is the event described in reporting from that time? Has the person who recorded it explained the circumstances?
No single check answers everything. An earlier upload can disprove a claim that a recording is new, but it does not necessarily establish the exact filming date. A recognizable building can identify a place without explaining the reason people gathered there. Strong verification connects those pieces rather than substituting one for the rest.
The practical response is not to invent a competing explanation. If the date or setting cannot be established, the honest description is that they remain unverified. Waiting to share is preferable to supplying confidence the evidence does not support.
In this case, the dated original and matching contemporary material support a specific correction: the footage belongs to the 2023 pension protests. Anyone who shared it as new can correct the caption and link to the verification without reposting the misleading claim as a fresh headline.
