The August 26 disaster is documented by eyewitness video, satellite imagery and seismic evidence. Independent reporting and geologic analysis indicate that a high-mountain rock-and-glacier collapse sent a destructive mixture of ice, mud, water and debris downstream.
Why the repeated number caused confusion
Early disaster reports are provisional. Authorities may issue separate counts for different locations or nationalities, and multiple news organizations may cite the same official briefing. Repetition shows that outlets share a source; it does not prove that an event was invented.
Counts also change as communications are restored and rescuers reach isolated communities. Reuters reported on September 7 that rescue teams were still searching for hydropower workers, including people who may be trapped in tunnels. That continuing operation is another reason early figures should not be treated as final.
