Duval voters are being urged to alert poll workers immediately if they have difficulty using a touchscreen ballot-marking device, after some early voters reported trouble selecting choices. The reports come as another deadline arrives: requests for a general-election ballot to be mailed must reach the elections office by 5 p.m. Eastern today, October 22.

Action News Jax reported October 21 that voters had complained about an unresponsive ExpressVote touchpad. Supervisor of Elections Jerry Holland said his office had received a similar complaint and wanted problems reported promptly.

Review the printed ballot

Holland explained that ExpressVote marks a paper ballot; it does not count the vote. Voters can inspect the printed selections before proceeding. If something is incorrect, he said, they can request another ballot and another machine.

He also recommended using the device’s stylus when a voter has difficulty making a selection. The station’s report does not establish that votes were changed or that the complaints represent a countywide equipment failure. The extent and cause of the reported problems remain unclear.

Two different deadlines

The Supervisor of Elections’ official notice says 5 p.m. today is the deadline to request that a ballot be mailed. It is not the deadline for returning a completed ballot.

For a ballot to count, the office must receive it by 7 p.m. Eastern on Election Day, November 3. The notice advises returning it promptly and says ballots may also be delivered to the office during office hours or to early-voting sites during early-voting hours.

Voters needing assistance can use the official elections website or call 904-255-8683. Reporting a difficulty while still at the polling place gives election staff an opportunity to address it before the voter leaves.
