The World Health Organization says the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has reached two additional health zones: Bulu in Sud Ubangi province and Dungu in Haut-Uele province, near the border with South Sudan.
The expansion brings the reported total to 63 affected health zones across seven provinces. As of September 23, the WHO reported 7,890 confirmed cases and 3,799 deaths.
Why containment is difficult
Conflict and population displacement are limiting access to some communities, complicating contact tracing and delaying treatment. Ebola spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids; it is not transmitted through routine distant contact.
Confirmed versus developing
The affected zones and current totals come from the WHO. The figures may rise or be revised as laboratories confirm suspected cases and delayed reports reach health authorities.
