Bend, Oregon, is confronting the deaths of three children and a teacher after a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School on October 15, with district classes canceled Friday and investigators working to establish what happened.

Police said the children killed were 5, 8 and 11 years old, according to Oregon Public Broadcasting’s overnight reporting. Another child, age 7, and a teacher were being treated at St. Charles Medical Center Bend.

The suspected shooter, described by police as a 16-year-old carrying a long gun, also died. Police said a community member shot the suspect after seeing him enter the school. That is the authorities’ preliminary account, not a completed reconstruction of every movement or shot.

The early emergency calls described shots fired into a car before subsequent callers reported gunfire inside the school. Families were directed to a reunification center while officers searched classrooms. OPB reported that all Bend-La Pine district classes were canceled October 16 and that Deschutes County was assembling mental-health professionals to support children and the wider community.

The available account does not establish a motive. It also leaves questions about the sequence of events and how the suspect obtained the weapon. Those gaps should remain identified as gaps rather than filled with speculation circulating online.

For families beyond Oregon, the story reaches into an ordinary expectation: children should return from school. But the public’s need for answers does not erase the privacy of injured children, bereaved relatives or students who witnessed the violence. Names and personal details require confirmation before publication.

As the investigation develops, casualty figures, medical information and the official timeline may be clarified. Readers should distinguish a police account released during an active investigation from findings reached after evidence has been reviewed.

The immediate verified concerns are the lives lost, the people receiving treatment, the interruption to schooling and the support being organized for the community. This article will require review as authorities release additional information. The accompanying archival photograph shows Bend’s Drake Park, not the school or the shooting.
