Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says Apple Executive Chair Tim Cook described the country’s social-media protections as world-leading during a meeting at Apple Park in California.
Australia restricts social-media use by children under 16 and has proposed giving all users a choice between algorithmically recommended content and a feed limited to people and accounts they intentionally follow.
Cook subsequently emphasized Apple’s support for online child safety in a public post.
Why other countries are watching
Australia was the first country to adopt a nationwide under-16 social-media restriction. European officials and other governments are considering similar approaches, meaning the results could shape future platform rules well beyond Australia.
Supporters argue that age limits and greater feed control can reduce exposure to harmful material and addictive recommendation systems. Critics question whether effective age verification can occur without collecting additional personal information or excluding young people from beneficial online communities.
The importance of feed choice
Algorithmic feeds decide which posts receive attention based partly on predicted engagement. A following-only option would give users more direct control, but it might also reduce exposure to breaking news, new creators and information outside their existing network.
