Ohio gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton was unharmed after an armed man knocked over several people while trying to reach her at the Canfield Fair on Sunday, authorities said.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol told Reuters that officers arrested a 38-year-old man who had two pistols and a Taser. He was booked into the Mahoning County Jail and charged with disorderly conduct and two counts of assault.
Motive has not been established
Investigators had not announced a motive as of Monday. That distinction matters: the presence of weapons and criminal charges is confirmed, but it would be irresponsible to assign the suspect a political ideology or claim a specific plan without evidence.
Charges are allegations. The accused is entitled to due process, and a court — not a headline — determines guilt.
Political leaders condemn the incident
Acton’s campaign said violence has no place in Ohio. A spokesperson for her Republican opponent, Vivek Ramaswamy, also condemned the incident and said candidates should be able to meet voters without fearing violence. Republican Governor Mike DeWine and local Democratic officials issued similar statements.
