Apple retail workers in Italy went on strike Friday as the company launched the iPhone 18 Pro worldwide.
More than 1,600 employees across 17 stores were covered by the action. Italian unions organized pickets and called for additional hiring, permanent contracts for some temporary workers and opportunities for part-time employees to receive more hours.
Union representatives said major product launches increase workloads while job responsibilities have become less clear and more focused on customer support. Apple said its stores remained open and argued that it provides industry-leading compensation, health benefits and employee-wellness programs.
The opposing statements should be presented separately. The strike and its demands are documented, while claims about worsening conditions represent the workers’ and unions’ position and are disputed by the company.
Why it matters
Product launches are usually covered through devices, prices and consumer demand. The strike focuses attention on the retail employees who manage crowds, demonstrations, technical questions and customer complaints behind those launches.
