All 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico will participate in the federal government’s new Medicaid drug-pricing initiative, President Donald Trump announced Friday.
The program, called the GENEROUS model, is built around agreements in which participating pharmaceutical companies offer Medicaid prices intended to resemble those paid in other developed countries. More than two dozen drugmakers have reached pricing agreements with the administration.
The White House Council of Economic Advisers projects $27.6 billion in savings for states and $36.6 billion for the federal government over 10 years. Those figures are forecasts, not savings already realized.
Medicaid already receives large legally required discounts, and most enrollees pay relatively little directly for prescriptions. That means government savings should not automatically be described as an equivalent reduction at every patient’s pharmacy counter. Pharmaceutical-industry representatives also argue that the policy could reduce investment in future treatments.
What is confirmed
Nationwide participation and the drugmaker agreements are confirmed. The total savings, effect on access and broader consequences for medical research will become clearer only after implementation.
